Wayanad

The third day, we decided to ride on a bike instead. We went to a tribal village in Wayanad. There I saw coffee trees bearing beans for the first time. I even tasted a ripe pulp. It tasted sweet. We were there for an Architectural survey for Athul, who is doing his M.Arch in Himachal Pradesh.

I learned of ways to fold the banana leaf after eating, and the meanings associated with it

The place reminded me so much of home. There I met the chieftain of the village, he carried a curved sword. It goes everywhere with him. The sword is associated with some spiritual and supernatural forces. It is the symbol of his power over the tribe. He told us about the flood that recently hit Kerala. The water levels almost reached the height of a full grown man in the exact spot we were standing. It was a nightmare just to imagine.

After collecting the data, we headed for Edakkal caves. We had lunch the traditional Kerala style in a restaurant. As soon as I entered I saw the mud floor was moped with cow dung. I remembered my grandmother collecting fresh cow dung early in the morning, mix it with mud and moping the whole house. The dish were served in a banana leaf as if the freshly moped floor isn’t enough to remind me of home. I learned of ways to fold the banana leaf after eating, and the meanings associated with it.

I got baked and sunburned the shit out of my skin

We reached Edakkal caves by 4.15 p.m, it happened that the entry closes at 4 p.m . We were denied entry. Disheartened, we went to see Phantom rock instead. The place has nothing much to talk about. It is a head shaped rock sitting in top of another. The view of Wayanad from there is breathtaking though. We rode for so long my bums ached, my legs longed to be stretched. I got baked and sunburned the shit out of my skin. On the way back, we passed through a forest area. We saw few deers trying to cross the road. I reached Nijil’s place and slept like a log.
